Understanding Indeed's Apply Sync (Free Option)

When you post your first job through the ATS, it is automatically submitted to Indeed.com via Indeed Apply Sync -- giving your listing organic visibility to Indeed's massive audience of over 140 million unique visitors each month, at no cost to you. Not a bad deal for a free feature.

Because we hear a lot of questions about how this works, we wanted to break it all down for you right here.

What Is Indeed Apply Sync?

Indeed Apply Sync is the free, organic job feed that sends your active job postings to Indeed's job board automatically. "Organic" simply means your listing is ranked by relevance and date -- no paid promotion involved. As Indeed describes it, these are "the latest jobs related to your search query" and will naturally move down in search results over time as newer postings are added.

Indeed pulls job listings from a variety of sources, including live feeds from Applicant Tracking Systems like yours. If you want a bigger visibility boost, Indeed does offer paid sponsorship to elevate your postings in search results -- but that is a separate, optional feature.

Why Might Your Job Not Appear on Indeed?

Before your jobs go live on Indeed, their Search Quality Team may review your company to confirm that postings are unique, high-quality, and from a legitimate employer. This is Indeed's way of keeping their job board clean and trustworthy -- good for job seekers, and good for you.

Indeed Apply Sync has strict guidelines to prevent spammy or misleading postings. Even well-intentioned listings can accidentally run afoul of these rules. Here are the most common reasons a job may not appear:

  • Location in the job title -- Keep location details in the designated fields, not the title itself.
  • Multiple jobs in a single post -- Each posting should be for one distinct role.
  • Non-paying or commission-only positions -- These are not eligible for organic visibility.
  • Posting from multiple sources -- Indeed only accepts listings from a single source. If your jobs are being submitted from more than one place, Indeed may suppress them.
  • Generic or non-unique company name -- If your company name is too common, Indeed may flag it as a duplicate source. A small adjustment in your Applicant Tracking System (ATS)account to make the name unique usually resolves this. An administrator can update the company name by navigating to My Account > Account Details > Company Info.
  • Job titles listed as "General Application" -- These are not eligible for organic visibility.
  • Staffing or recruiting firms -- Per Indeed's guidelines, staffing and recruiting agencies do not qualify for organic visibility through the free feed.
